Cyprus Award for World’s Best Teacher

Award-winning ‘best teacher of the world’, Andria Zafirakou, will be in Cyprus for a unique presentation.

The Youth Organisation of Cyprus is
honouring Andria Zafirakou who, according to the Varkey Foundation, is the best teacher of the world on Friday, February 15, at the Pallas Cinema Theatre in Nicosia. Zafirakou stood out among 30,000 teachers and was honoured with the 2018 Global Teacher Prize (2018).

The Youth Organisation of Cyprus aims to focus on young people’s careers and wants to contribute to the creation of new concepts for schools and the whole learning process. Its vision focuses on a school that concentrates on the fields of science, engineering, arts, mathematics and incorporates basic principles such as thematic and
personalised learning. A school where students will be happy to go.

Zafirakou teaches art at the Alperton School in a troubled area of London. As she points out, what she gains from her students – whom she welcomes every day in 35 different languages – is far more than what she offers them. She has introduced an education system that encourages
marginalised children to participate in school life and make use of their potential.

After Zafirakos’ presentation, a debate will be held, coordinated by Charidimos Tsoukas, professor of strategic management at Columbia Ship Management at the University of Cyprus. The discussion will also include Andri Savva from the department of education sciences at the University of Cyprus who
specialises in art in education.

The event hopes to include addresses educators, educational
organisations, academics, parents, students, members of the education committee of the parliament, representatives of the ministry of education services, vocational guidance advisors, universities, entrepreneurship centres, and media representatives.
Entry is free, but registration is required.
