Tourist Arrivals Increase by 26.9%

On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 286.331 in April 2017 compared to 225.575 in April 2016, recording an increase of 26,9%. April 2017 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month.

For the period of January – April 2017 arrivals of tourists totalled 572,024 compared to 477,183 in the corresponding period of 2016, recording an increase of 19.9% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first four months of the year. According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom increased by 16.3% in April 2017 compared to April 2016 while an increase of 21.8% was recorded for tourists from Russia.

Increases were also recorded from other important tourist markets, such as Germany (156.6%) and Israel (77.0%). Contrary to that, a decrease of 2.5% in tourist arrivals from Greece was recorded. The United Kingdom and Russia constitute the main sources of tourism for Cyprus for April 2017, with proportions of 37.1% and 16.4% respectively, while arrivals from Germany comprise 8,3% and from Israel 7.5% of total arrivals. For a percentage of 78.9% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in April 2017 was holidays, for 14.3% visit to friends and relatives and for 6.6% business. Men comprise 44.7% of tourists and women 55.3%, whilst most of the tourists belonged to the age group of 20-44 years.
