THE MAYOR of
Paphos has said the municipality is aiming to make the town functional, modern and creative.
Phedonas Phedonos said Paphos will confirm its place as a prominent tourist and cultural destination this year, whilst providing residents with a home that offers a good quality of life.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, he said the current construction works, renovations and ‘facelift’ of parts of of the town will eventually provide the cornerstone on which to build real and meaningful restart for the resort. He described a cultural, spiritual and economic "reboot” – adding new cultural sites means the value is not only economic.
He said the Municipality of Paphos continued progress of the complete reconstruction of roads totaling 21 kilometers in length. Phedonos toured construction sites in the town center last week, noting that many projects have not yet been completed - but said they would be finished in the coming weeks.
Paphos, along with Aarhus in Denmark, are the current European Capitals of Culture. The European Capital of Culture initiative was started in 1985 in Athens and has come to include cities across the continent, including Warsaw, Poland and San Sebastian, Spain in 2016.
